Wines by the glass

If a watery view is restorative to the spirits, the white-fronted former ferry inn on the shore of Loch Linnhe, not far from Oban, is ideally sited. Sunsets over the distant hills are a particular draw in the summer months, and the dining room is a delight whatever the weather, with deeply upholstered chairs, smart linen-draped tables and sprays of flowers adding to the welcoming tone. The cooking has taken on a modern sheen in recent years, but without abandoning its commitment to the clear, resonant flavours of unimpeachable Scottish produce. Smoked salmon from Inverawe is the focal point of a starter plate that also includes pickled and beetroot-cured incarnations, matched with some mild goats' cheese, or there could be old-school crab ravioli in shellfish sauce scented with wild garlic and lemon gel. Main courses mobilise gentle Asian hints, as in the Indian-spiced mussel and clam vinaigrette that comes with monkfish and sea veg, while meat might be a trio of lamb cuts – roast loin, braised neck and crisped breast – with baby vegetables and fondant potato. The simplest ways to finish are with a plate of artisan cheeses or a bouquet of ice creams and sorbets, but desserts such as honey cheesecake with poached pear and yogurt sorbet are the principal lure.
