With fine beer from Flying Monk Brewery, alley-skittles and a strong menu of both old-style and contemporary dishes, who would ever want to leave this character Cotswold village retreat? Not John Rattlebone, that's for sure; this Saxon warrior's name lives on as does his restless spirit that occasionally manifests itself here. The interior is one of beams, flagged floors, log-burners and golden stone, and walled gardens enclose three boules pistes and sheltered patios, ideal for the July cider festival. Country bistro home cooking is the style here; kick-in with warm salad of seared pigeon breast, then chow down to Gloucester Old Spots pork belly and chorizo cassoulet.
