This 17th-century inn is a well-known landmark on the A4, once the main coach road between London and Bristol. Only 300 yards from lock gate 70 on the Kennet & Avon Canal, it is popular with the boating fraternity, walkers and cyclists. It changes its real ales frequently, although Falling Star from Wickwar has long been a favourite, with Andwells, Box Steam, Ramsbury or West Berkshire alongside. There are three inviting restaurant areas in which to eat traditional pub favourites, such as braised faggots and caramelised onion gravy: pan-fried lamb’s liver and crispy bacon; Pelican fish pie; and the seasonal baked hake en papillote with buttered vegetables, plus steaks and burgers. Many of these, and snacks, are also available at lunchtime. There’s a on the first Friday of every month.
