Beer festival

In a quiet village on the River Bourne, this 17th-century inn was named after early Victorian lord of the manor, Sir Henry Malet. Fruit machine and piped music free, it has an enormous inglenook fireplace, and is bedecked with prints, trophies and myriad curiosities. Regional microbreweries are strongly supported, and most of the Mediterranean, Oriental and traditional English dishes on the ever-changing blackboard are locally sourced too. Game is plentiful in season, other possibilities are scampi with home-made tartare sauce; and green chilli, ginger and cardamom chicken curry. In fine weather you can sit in the garden.
