This much expanded 16th-century thatched and timbered pub is perfectly situated for Stonehenge, Bath and Winchester and for exploring the ancient oaks of Savernake Forest. Only 100 yards from the Kennet & Avon Canal and the Mid-Wilts Way, it has an interior as charming as the setting, with low, oak-beamed ceilings, exposed brickwork and wide open fireplaces. In the bar you’ll find St Austell Tribute and local ale, Ramsbury Bitter. The daily-changing menus cover all manner of pubby favourites and beyond. Look for starters like fresh crab cocktail with lemon mayonnaise; or creamy goats’ cheese with spiced beetroot and walnuts; then continue with roast topside of beef with Yorkshire pudding; Moroccan-spiced lamb pie; Thai green chicken curry; or pork and potato vindaloo.
