On the old coaching route to Huddersfield and Halifax on the edge of the village, this refurbished 18th-century pub has views towards Emley Moor Mast and the surrounding countryside. The pub is popular with walkers, cyclists and locals – walking maps are available from the bar, which is warmed by a working Yorkshire range. Of the eight cask ales, four are permanent (including their own Ossett Brewery ales), and four are ever-rotating guests featuring microbreweries. A straightforward menu offers the likes of mushroom Stroganoff; chicken breast stuffed with Wensleydale; vegetable lasagne; and chorizo chicken with rice and salad. Look to the blackboards for daily specials and desserts.
