Enter this traditional 19th-century inn on a former packhorse route above the River Colne and the Huddersfield Canal and you’ll find yourself in a rambling series of rooms, fire-warmed in winter. The restaurant’s brasserie-style food is exemplified by starters of local forest mushroom risotto, parmesan and thyme with white truffle oil; or smoked haddock fish cakes, while typical main dishes include braised lamb shank, black pudding mash with garlic and rosemary jus and black pudding mash; or rosettes of English beef fillet, spinach, fondant and four peppercorn sauce; the beef (proudly sourced from Yorkshire farms) is aged for up to 50 days.
