With views across fields and woods, this 16th-century former drovers’ alehouse is one of those quintessential English country pubs that Sussex specialises in. Tucked below the steep scarp slope of the South Downs National Park, expect unspoilt cottage-style bars, brick and quarry tiled floors, low beams, latch doors, a vast inglenook, and a mix of antique furnishings. On fine days the extensive rear garden, with roaming bantams, is hugely popular. Tip-top real ales, including local Ballards, are drawn from the cask, and a daily-changing blackboard menu offers classic country cooking with game abundant in season and treacle tart being a typical dessert.
