Tempting menu in South Downs village

At a glance

Bar menu
Open all year

In the dimpled shade of a huge maple, this attractive stone-and-whitewashed inn overlooks a corner of the green in this peaceful village set in the wooded hills of the South Downs National Park. Cricketers from the nearby ground amble here to enjoy Fuller's beers and guest ales, settling in the oak-beamed, fire-warmed heart of the 16th-century building to select from a menu finely balanced between good pub grub (fish and chips, grills) and enticing diversions such as jerk pulled pork; and BBQ piri piri half chicken, winter slaw and chunky chips. Finish with home-made bread and butter pudding perhaps.
