Visit the family-run Crabtree and you’ll be following in the footsteps of author and poet Hilaire Belloc who was often to be found here. The inn, originally built in 1539, is located in beautiful countryside which is where the pub sources the vast majority of their produce. Trusty local companies supply meat from high welfare farms and the daily caught fish and shellfish come via the harbour at nearby Shoreham. Start perhaps with cured salmon with yuzu, fennel, soy and ginger, followed by braised pork shoulder with mash, buttered greens and apple purée; or poached stuffed plaice fillets with wild mushrooms, curried mussel velouté, crispy mussels, braised fennel and fine beans. The enticing dessert menu might include crab apple and walnut crumble; peach, apricot and thyme tarte Tatin; or apple and sultana strudel.
