Thought to have once been a courthouse and probably named after the old chequer tree that used to stand in front of the building, this locals’ pub is an elegant place to eat and drink. Go for a pint of Prestcott Chequered Flag or their own Chequers Pale Ale in the bar, before moving on to the dining room, decorated in French style with ornate mirrors and chairs, rich tapestries and comfortable armchairs. A choice of interesting sandwiches might include grilled brie and apple chutney; or BBQ pulled pork flatbread with rocket, and there are classics like beef chilli con carne; and cheeseburger with gherkins. For something more substantial, kick off proceedings with chicken and wild mushroom galatine with tarragon mayonnaise; followed by crispy confit duck leg, fondant potato, buttered cabbage and plum jus; or artichoke, fennel and saffron ravioli, Pernod spinach cream. Puddings may include cinnamon sponge, warm apple rose and ginger syrup.
