This imposing corner-plot pub stands close to the heart of Carshalton village. The enclosed walled garden area houses a wood-fired pizza oven, while a private dining room is ideal for group gatherings. Both wet and food sides of the business are increasingly popular; six real ales, such as Wimbledon, Surrey Hills and Dark Star attract beer lovers – there's a summer beer festival, too. The tempting menu encourages diners to tarry a while in the modish interior. Commence with warm crab tart with avocado puree, pink grapefruit and spring onion; or roasted cauliflower soup with truffle oil and Welsh rarebit; leaving room for mains such as beer battered halloumi (or cod) with minted peas and chips; or chargrilled lamb chop with garlic and olive mash, asparagus, peas and broad beans. Raspberry Bakewell tart with raspberry ripple ice cream or lemon and ginger posset with cardamom crumble with finish things off nicely,
