Family-owned since 1909, Helga and Conrad Sturt’s slate-floored, low-beamed, 17th-century free house offers the traditional country pub experience, including locally brewed Hogs Back real ale and Lilley’s Bee Sting Pear cider from Somerset. There’s plenty of choice at lunchtime, while dinner options include baked camembert with chilli jam; red Thai curry; calves’ liver and smoked bacon with bubble-and-squeak; braised venison and ale ragout; and smoked trout salad. Go past the patio terrace into the well-kept beer garden with its children’s play area.
