Dating in part to 1368, the Fox & Hounds has been a pub since 1601. Allegedly, yet eminently believably, 17th-century pirate-turned-smuggler John Trenchman haunts the building, having been ambushed and fatally wounded nearby. The restaurant's large inglenook and the bar's real fire add to the old-world charm. Food-wise there’s plenty to choose from, including a potted duck liver and Cointreau pâté starter; mains of haggis, neeps and tatties; fisherman's pie; and hunter's chicken with bacon and barbecue sauce, as well as specials. Landlady Ellie Conway travels weekly to the south coast for her fish. A large garden features a pirate ship play area that will keep children happy.
