Traditional old fishermen’s pub with river and marsh views

In contrast to pubs that don't tolerate wellies indoors, in winter this one actually recommends them because it stands right by the water, sometimes in it, as the sobering flood-level markers testify. Inside are two snug, photograph-plastered bars, the upper, nautically themed one with a wood-burner, while in the lower one staff must stoop to serve pints of Adnams through a hatch. Fish dishes take high priority here. The menu begins with little taster dishes to ‘pick, mix and share’ – potted shrimps; cockle popcorn; roll herrings being just three; then you could choose an ‘other fishiness’ dish – grilled spiced mackerel fillet; or clam, king prawn, smoked haddock and potato chowder perhaps. Meat eaters are not left out with dishes such as pulled beef brisket in a toasted brioche bun with BBQ sauce.
