An independent, quirky inn with something to suit everyone

With its fine roofline, dormer windows and old coaching courtyard, this rambling 16th-century building certainly looks like a traditional roadside inn. Stepping inside this historic building you’ll be wowed by an amazing interior that blends original oak beams, wooden floors and big fireplaces with funky fabrics, designer wallpapers and bold colours. This, along with their dedication, is how family owners Cheryl, Wayne and Sonia have created a success story, making the bar, with scrubbed pine tables and cosy seats by a winter fire, the hub of the building (and indeed the village). Here you can study the menus, perhaps with one of the 11 wines by the glass, or an East Anglian real ale from Adnams, Wolf or Humpty Dumpty. Menus evolve with the seasons, with every effort made to reduce ‘food miles’ by sourcing locally. In the AA Rosette dining rooms, try market fish in beer batter with double cooked chips and crushed peas. They say people travel miles for the pub’s legendary sticky toffee pudding, rock salt caramel and toffee ice cream, a must to finish any meal. Bar meals include classics like Newmarket sausages with mash and caramelised red onion gravy; and chicken curry with basmati rice.
