The inn, which enjoys a peaceful setting beside the alder-fringed meadows of the River Stour, is said to be the last remaining place from which press-gangs recruited their ‘volunteers’ in this area. Today’s customers can rest easy, perhaps recovering from strolls around the idyllic village, which is close to the heart of ‘Constable Country’. The Anchor is a light, airy destination where local and regional ales change monthly; the riverside decking and garden are ideal spots to tarry a while. The head chef presides over a progressive menu of pub favourites and modern European dishes, so anticipate smoked fish platter (the inn has its own smokehouse); trio of Kerridge sausages and mash; battered ‘catch of the day’ with hand-cut chips; a range of pizzas; and for dessert, lemon posset with lime and lavender jelly.
