AA Pick of the Pubs
Open all year
From the grassy beer garden of this appealing old country pub on a low ridge above the Chew Valley are gorgeous views across pastures and pocket woodlands. It's from these tranquil acres of north Somerset that most of the produce used to create the two AA-Rosette cuisine is provenanced; beer from the respected Butcombe Brewery is equally local. Brother and sister team of Josh and Holly Eggleton have now celebrated a decade here, during which tenure they've built a tremendous reputation for the invigorating menus based on a mantra of field-to-fork simplicity. The daily-changing à la carte may offer a starter of rabbit terrine, celeriac remoulade, apple and Butcombe chutney; a mains like venison faggot, hash brown, squash and kale; or fillet of brill with brown shrimp, celery, Savoy cabbage and seaweed butter. To finish, perhaps sticky ale pudding with salted caramel sauce and stout ice cream. The six-course tasting menu with wine pairings is a real treat.
