About 1598 Sir Edward Phelips, Master of the Rolls and the prosecutor during the Gunpowder Plot trial, built Montacute House, now owned by the National Trust. Next door, overlooking the village square, stands this 17th-century hamstone building, offering well-kept Palmers beers and Thatchers cider. The main menu features their ever popular shortcrust steak and ale pie, triple-cooked chips and peas; traditional beef lasagne; and hand-carved sliced gammon, free-range eggs and those tempting triple-cooked chips. Sandwiches and jacket potatoes are available too. The pub, with its beautiful walled garden, featured in the 1995 film Sense and Sensibility and the more recent BBC drama series, Wolf Hall.
