Originally the Railway Hotel, which hosted passengers and goods yard workers on the Somerset and Dorset line for 100 years before closure in the 1960s. Its current name is based in a legend that a live toad was added to the cider barrel before the bung was inserted. In the capable hands of Adrian and Kate Brixey, the pub offers Butcombe and guest ales, along with Ashton Press cider and a dozen wines by the glass. The menu proffers staples like liver and bacon with black pudding and mash; round off with one of Kate’s home-made desserts such as warm chocolate fudge cake with clotted cream ice cream.
