The tower of Wells Cathedral protrudes above the rooftops a short distance away from this attractive, three-storey, blue-shuttered pub with pretty window boxes. The interior is appealing, too, with a large open fire in the big, comfortable bar, interesting bric-à-brac, discreet music and board games. Owner Tessa Hennessey, who once had her own restaurant in South Africa, is one of the two chefs, the other being the Fountain's long-serving Julie Pearce. Together they maintain a winning repertoire of high quality, home-cooked food, among which are crispy squid with garlic mayo; chicken and butternut Madras curry with coconut rice; grilled salmon with seasonal stir-fry vegetables; and filo parcel with feta, sun-blushed tomatoes, olives and pine nuts. Some of these you’ll also find at lunchtime, alongside savoury crêpes, and home-made lasagne. A meal could finish with pear tarte Tatin, or home-made cranberry and almond Bakewell tart. Off-street parking is available opposite the inn.
