Originally a beer house serving local peat-cutters, this low-beamed, flagstoned pub in the Somerset levels is perhaps 400 years old. The winter log fire takes the chill off Bristol Channel winds; in summer the half-acre beer garden is great for families and sun worshippers. Food is plentiful, imaginative and home made; typical options include spicy battered chilli beef; lasagne; and cheesecake. Look out for specials such as fish pie au gratin; game casserole; or teriyaki belly pork. A good range of cask ales and ciders from regional suppliers completes the picture.
