During Judge Jeffreys’ time in the 17th century, prisoners from nearby Wells jail were taken to the Castle of Comfort for their last meal and a pint before being hanged at Gibbets Brow. Thankfully, modern-day visitors to this charming country pub on top of The Mendips can enjoy their time without the worry of being taken away. Local Butcombe beer and Thatchers cider are amongst the regularly changing options at the bar, and from the menu, perhaps chargrilled steaks; lamb chops; lasagne; home-made pies and traditional ham, egg and chips.
