A former farmhouse, this place has been a pub since the early 1900s, when it catered for thirsty workers on the Earl of Plymouth’s estate. Clive of India lived on the estate in the 18th century, hence the name. Today it is a mix of contemporary style with original features still evident. The bar comprises two areas: an 18th-century lounge with log fire and Clive’s original coat of arms; and a more contemporary upper part that leads out to a courtyard with tables and parasols. You’ll find Hobsons ales at the bar, plus ciders such as Robinsons Flagon, and 16 wines served by the glass. Lunchtime bar snacks served with home-cut chips proffer the likes of croque monsieur or a smoked salmon and cream cheese sandwich; while a three-course choice in the evening could comprise pan-fried scallops with prawns, saffron risotto, petit pois and chorizo; followed by bubble-and-squeak with wild mushrooms, cabbage, chestnuts, poached egg and wholegrain mustard sauce. If there's still room try strawberry and buttermilk pannacotta; or apple crumble with granola crust and custard. Tastefully converted period outbuildings provide accommodation.
