With old beams, open fireplaces and secret passages leading to the church, this black-and-white-timbered, former coaching inn was once known for its bear-baiting pit. In the 1680s, a landlord threw Jasper, a regular down on his luck, out into a bitterly cold night. Within hours both were dead, Jasper from hypothermia, the landlord from fright, as if he’d seen a ghost, which legend suggests was Jasper. Food includes prawn cocktail with rosemary and sea salt focaccia; breaded whitebait; ‘proper’ chicken and mushroom pie with wholegrain mash, seasonal greens and red wine gravy; triple chocolate brownie, white chocolate sauce and coconut ice cream.
