This welcoming place is run by husband and wife team Chris and Jan Winson, who have built up an impressive reputation for both their beer and their food. In the bar you’ll find Belhaven IPA, draught Peroni, plus Stewarts Brewery and Scottish Borders Brewery bottled beers. Plus there’s a whisky map and tasting notes to study before choosing your single malt. There are two dining rooms, one overlooking the village green, and in both the menus feature home-made, locally-sourced food. Dinner might kick off with carpaccio of venison, parsnip purée, and apple and celeriac slaw, or home-made ham hock terrine with toast and pickled vegetables, before moving on to roast chicken breast with a haggis bon bon, fondant potatoes and braised red cabbage; or pan-seared cod fillet with butternut squash purée, olive mash and saffron cream. Desserts might feature orange pannacotta, sticky toffee pudding, or chocolate fondant.
