The 17th-century thatched Blue Ball, only a few miles from Rutland Water, makes an excellent stopping-off point for cyclists and walkers. Landlord Dominic Way looks after his ales, as locals in the beamed and cosy bar will testify. Seasonal and local ingredients go into classics, and modern dishes such as seared pigeon, beetroot purée, chorizo and dressed salad; marinated swordfish loin, lemon and parsley potato cake and home-made salsa; and Bates Butchers’ sausages-of-the-week, mash, braised red cabbage and gravy. There is a Sunday roast menu and young diners are welcome to order small portions of most dishes, confirming the pub’s family-friendly credentials. Vegetarian and special diets are catered for.
