Hidden in the Windrush Valley you will find the idyllic village of Swinbrook where time stands still. Owners Archie and Nicola Orr-Ewing took on the lease of this dreamy, wisteria-clad stone pub from the late Dowager Duchess of Devonshire. The Swan is the perfect English country pub – it stands by the River Windrush near the village cricket pitch, overlooking unspoilt Cotswold countryside. It gets even better inside: the two cottage-style front rooms, replete with worn flagstones, crackling log fires, low beams and country furnishings, lead through to a cracking bar and classy conservatory extension. First-class pub food ranges from simple bar snacks (beef dripping, gherkins and toasted bread) to more substantial main courses of pork belly, black pudding, streaky bacon, creamy mash and sage jus; and confit duck leg, roast sweet potato, green beans, spinach and hazelnut pesto. You won’t want to leave, so book one of the stunning en suite rooms in the restored barn.
