Pub classics in an Oxfordshire village

At a glance

Bar menu
Open all year

A stone-built inn, dating from the 17th century, and handy for Woodstock and Blenheim Palace. Sir Winston Churchill (who was born at the Palace) and the Duke of Marlborough used to ride to the pub for a drink – and if it was good enough for them, then surely it’s good enough for anyone. There’s a cosy bar and a smart restaurant where you’ll find dishes like boxed camembert, roasted in garlic and rosemary, with onion jam and sliced baguette; confit duck, crispy bacon, beetroot, honey and walnut salad; hand-raised beef and Guinness pie, braised cabbage, creamy mash and red wine gravy; and caramelised lemon tart with raspberry sorbet.
