This picture-postcard thatched and timbered 16th-century village pub is not only pretty but also a cracking community local. Behind the bar, beers come from the likes of West Berkshire, and Loddon breweries, while a choice of wine comes from the very local Brightwell Vineyard. The pub holds a beer festival (with live music) for two days every summer. Hearty, traditional pub food is freshly prepared from local produce. Look to the chalkboard for the famous short-crust pastry pies of the day, or the main menu for things like lasagne, pork tenderloin with black pudding and caramelised apple, or vegetable chilli. Don’t miss the Sunday roast lunches.
