Built in 1869 for workers from Oxford University Press in the city's Jericho area, 'The Bookies' featured in the first episode of real ale-loving TV detective Morse and more recently in The Hairy Bikers’ Pubs That Built Britain series. Its quirky decoration includes a train set on the ceiling, a barrel of ‘help-yourself’ monkeys nuts and things French, courtesy of Gallic patron Michel. The menu offers snails in garlic butter; seared sea bass with French beans and crushed new potatoes; a selection of steaks; and a range of sweet and savoury crêpes. There are real ales on offer and ten wines by the glass. Well-behaved students, children and dogs are more than welcome.
