It may date from the 18th century, but Nick and Mary Galer have transformed The Miller of Mansfield into a thoroughly modern inn. Enjoying a prime spot in upmarket Goring on Thames, this former coaching inn’s location on the Oxfordshire/Berkshire border makes it an ideal pitstop for exploring the rolling Chilterns countryside. The food has earned two AA Rosettes and a typical dinner might begin with fallow deer tartare with sourdough, button mushrooms and horseradish followed by local partridge, sprout tops, ceps, chestnut purée and stout sauce. Local ales like Hook Norton Old Hooky, English wines and an extensive gin list befit the modern take on Georgian inn life.
