Once a staging post for boats on the Thames, this 400-year-old thatched and timber-framed pub is run by chef-patron Steven Sanderson. Locals supply game during the winter, and neighbours’ gardens and allotments also yield their bounty. In the kitchen, Steven devises straightforward British classics for his seasonal menus, using carefully chosen meats, fish from Devon and Cornwall markets, mussels from the Norfolk coast, and oysters from Scotland and Jersey. Try Loch Fyne smoked salmon, capers, shallots, lemon and brown bread followed by pressed shoulder of lamb, dauphinoise potatoes, carrots and shallot.
