Some experts attribute origins as a hosiery factory to this 200-year-old inn, citing as evidence its unusual vaulted brick ceiling, undoubtedly capable of supporting any weighty textile machinery above. Much older is the centurion, perhaps from the nearby Roman-British town of Margidunum, whose ghost you may run into. Normally on duty in the bar is owner Richard Spencer, dispensing his carefully tended real ales, while Vicky, his wife (a dab hand chef) is in the kitchen preparing dishes such as fresh beer-battered or oven-baked haddock and her very popular steak pies.
