Dating back to the 1700s, sheep drovers from the northern counties stayed at this stone building before it was used as a stopover for the mail stagecoach en route from Edinburgh and London. Well placed for salmon and trout fishing on the River Tweed and for shooting on the Northumberland estates, the Red Lion offers a relaxing atmosphere, good guest beers and wholesome food. Start with sautéed duck and chorizo with a green bean salad; or garlic wild mushrooms on toasted brioche before enjoying a classic steak and ale pie; or poached salmon fillet with smoked salmon and pea risotto. Finish with one of the home-made desserts. There’s also a beer festival the last weekend in June.
