Historic coaching inn in Roman garrison town

Open all year

A handsome, white-painted inn overlooking the widest part of Main Street. Formerly the King's Head, it was extended in the 18th century and dates back to 1529. The lounge has a log fire, but the real hub is the bar where Hadrian Border and Wylam ales, and all-day food are available. For a more formal meal it has to be the Barn Restaurant and its Northumberland beef sirloin steak; or beer-battered North Shields cod, hand-cut chips and mushy peas.
