Occupying the site of a former hospital, this eponymously named pub continues the caring tradition – with hospitality. In-patients have been known to make a speedy recovery while relaxing by the real fires, and enjoying the pub’s cosy corners and colourful spaces. Four real ales, including a pale ale brewed especially by Wylam Breweries, 17 wines by the glass, and a huge range of whiskies are dispensed at the huge oak bar. All-day sustenance ranges from good old-fashioned bar snacks such as corned beef and potato pie with brown sauce, to steaming plates of mince and dumplings with seasonal vegetables. Afternoon tea is a speciality.
