A humdinger of a pub

At a glance

AA Pick of the Pubs
Bar menu
Open all year

Facing a small, triangular green in a tiny hamlet of stone cottages, the terraced, tree-shaded garden of this convivial old drovers' inn looks out over the River Tyne as it curves round to the Roman town of Corbridge. The nearness of Hadrian’s Wall has long made people wonder whether some of its stones were liberated to build the pub. Wonder yourself in the flagstone-floored, beamed bar over a glass of High House Farm Nel's Best or Wylam Gold Tankard. The bar itself is fashioned from a great oak sideboard, chamberpots hang from the ceiling and a cast-iron range may blaze away. Appearing on the daily-changing menu might be beetroot, goats curd, fennel and apple salad and hazelnut; pan-fried whole plaice, samphire and caper butter; or rich beef mince on goose fat toast, watercress and pickled red cabbage. A small conservatory offers the best views from indoors.
