There's something about the yellow Northamptonshire stone and thatched roof of Nick Bonner and Ren Aveiro's Red Lion that declares 'classic English village pub'. Classic ideas in the food too, from a starter of ham hock and black pudding fritter with piccalilli mayonnaise; or whipped goats’ cheese, beetroot and walnut salad with sloe gin dressing, to mains of roasted hake with gnocchi and spicy tomato and chorizo casserole; or slow-cooked lamb shoulder, Greek-style salad and mint yogurt. Home-made doughnuts with warm jam sauce will prove more than tempting for dessert. As an accompaniment, a reasonably priced glass of Pinot Grigio or Malbec, or maybe a pint of Bombardier.
