Occupying a lovely position in the pretty village of Great Brington on the Althorp Estate, this 16th-century stone coaching inn has original decor throughout. A brick and cobbled courtyard is surrounded by stable rooms, and the enclosed flower garden is a peaceful spot in which to sample one of the real ales and ciders from a wide selection that includes Phipps IPA and Somersby cider. The restaurant specialises in traditional English cooking based on local produce. Start with game terrine, port jelly and toast, followed perhaps by slow-cooked pork belly, braised red cabbage, parsnip purée and red wine jus.
