AA Pick of the Pubs
Bar menu
Open all year

In the shadow of the Hambleton Hills, this white-painted village pub dates from the 17th century and was built using stones from the ruins of nearby Byland Abbey. One of the two oak-beamed, flagstone-floored bars has a huge inglenook fireplace, the other a wood-burning stove, and the atmosphere is relaxed and informal; popular with locals, walkers and cyclists, all can be found here enjoying a pint of Helmsley Yorkshire Legend. Modern British meals with a South African twist are prepared from high quality produce – sourced locally as far as possible. There’s a great selection of sandwiches at lunchtime and for dinner choose one of the Wombwell classics – steak, mushroom and Guinness pie; or try their South African bobotie – a mild and fruity curry with mango chutney. Leave room for one of the comforting home-made desserts, or a plate of local cheeses.
