This modest old pub is very popular with fishermen, as the River Esk runs along at the foot of the hill, and is a big draw for fly-fishers in particular. The pub sits back from the wide main road and it would be easy to drive past it, but that would be a mistake as the welcoming main bar is cosy and traditional, with low beams, dark green walls and comfy settles. The menu offers sandwiches, soup and hot focaccia rolls at lunchtime, as well as a range of light lunches, including mixed mushroom risotto; and fish stew. In the evening, the supper menu might include a starter of pan-fried duck liver with mushrooms and bacon on toast, and main courses such as beef Stroganoff; or Brazil nut and cranberry nut roast. There's a locals' bar too, but it only holds about a dozen people, so get there early.
