Beautiful views of the Dales await visitors to this former farmhouse, later a drovers’ inn, parts dating from 1615, the rest from 1835. When Winston Churchill stayed here on huntin’, shootin’, fishin’ holidays, he no doubt enjoyed the bar, which these days serves eminent Yorkshire real ales like Black Sheep and Dent Aviator. A family of three chefs run the inn (one of whom makes sculptures from sugar) producing lunchtime snacks of sandwiches and home-made sausages, and typical main dishes of beef and ale casserole; smoked haddock fishcakes; and specials of home-reared pork dishes and fish specials according to the daily catch.
