A modern approach to classic dishes is a mantra of chef-patron Paul Cunliffe at this country inn in a leafy Ure Valley village. It's blessed with open fires, stripped floorboards and homely furnishings; where Paul and his wife Janine tempt with pubby meals at the bar and a perky restaurant menu sourcing produce mostly from local farms and estates and fish from dayboats out of Hartlepool. Line caught haddock may appeal; or look to roast loin of hare or côte du venison from the carte. Beers are mostly from long-established Yorkshire breweries; the wine list has over 50 bins.
