In the tiny village of Caldwell amidst the delightful rolling countryside between Barnard Castle and Darlington, this lovely stone inn is a great place to seek out. With 10 wines by the glass, plenty more bins and reliable Yorkshire real ales, time passes easily here. A blend of traditional and modern rooms is the setting for unpicking a phenomenally comprehensive, globally inspired menu. Start perhaps with avocado and chilli tiger prawns; then follow with home-made suet steak and kidney pudding; or smoked haddock and spinach cheese melt with roast tomatoes.
