Halfway between Abergavenny and Monmouth on the B4223, this wisteria-clad family-run pub occupies a lovely spot in the pretty hamlet of Tal-y-Coed. Surrounded by stunning countryside, it’s a popular haunt for Offa’s Dyke walkers, who can refuel with a glass of Otter Bitter by the open fire or in the sunny garden. Chef Mark Edwards keeps things simple and his menus have broad appeal. Beer-battered black pudding might precede a main course of a trio of Rawlings award-winning sausages, served with mash and onion gravy.
