A charming family-run free house dating from the 16th century, The Crown has fine views of Skirrid (in Welsh, Ysgyrid Fawr) known also as Holy Mountain. Walkers and cyclists love it, but it’s a genuine community pub too, serving Bass, Rhymney, Wye Valley HPA and guest real ales as well as Mortimers Orchard cider, all ideal before or with garlic mushrooms on crostini or deep-fried squid with harissa mayo and rocket; venison sausages with mash, green beans and red onion gravy; or tenderloin pork with mange tout and Calvados sauce; and a dessert of sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce; or poached pear with vanilla ice cream.
