The coming of the nearby railway meant demolition of part of what is now London’s sole surviving example of a 17th-century, galleried coaching inn, but what’s left is impressive. National Trust-owned, it still features some very old woodwork, like the simple wall seats. Serving thirsty Londoners for centuries, the pub is mentioned in Dickens’s Little Dorrit. As well as Greene King ales and rotating guests, George Inn Ale is the house beer. Classic pub grub is the order of the day.
