A mid-Victorian corner pub with Gothic revival windows and lofty ceilings, the long bar at The Empress serves ale and cider from venerable East End brewer, Truman’s. Neighbourhood suppliers are important to The Empress, with fish from Jonathan Norris, bread from E5 Bakehouse and coffee from Climpson & Sons. Among the dishes on the modern European menu are burrata, sweet tomato, black sesame and salsa verde; quail with roasted roots, and onglet steak with chips and parsley aïoli. The short list of sweet things may include pistachio financier and vanilla ice cream. There are roasts on Sundays, a popular weekend brunch menu and a cracking meal deal on Monday evenings.
