The original patrons of today's stylish pub would have been boatmen from the Croydon Canal, which ran behind the pub until 1836. Georgian features remain in this popular meeting place, where good beers like Golden from Brockley Brewery quench the thirst. A cosmopolitan choice of menu dishes caters for most tastes; a starter may be duck and pistachio terrine with cranberry confit and grilled sourdough. Mains range from venison sausages, sweet potato mash, sticky onions and gravy to cod fillet with Puy lentils, bacon and spinach. Orange posset with poached rhubarb and shortbread biscuit should take care of a sweet tooth.
